Leland M. Steitz, 82, La Crosse, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, at University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan.

He was born May 16, 1931, in Bison to Jacob and Catharine (Wilhelm) Steitz. He was a lifelong resident of Rush County.

He married Mary Foos on Sept. 8, 1978, in Otis. He was employed by Kansas Power & Light for 36 years prior to retirement in 1990.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Otis, American Legion Post No. 33, La Crosse, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9076, Hays.

Survivors include his wife, La Crosse; a son, DeWayne Foos, and wife, Vicky, La Crosse; a daughter, Patricia Petz, and husband, Danny, McCracken; a brother, Maynard Steitz; and three sisters, Ruby Shank, Texas, Wilma Steadman, Great Bend, and Leona Keil, Greeley, Colo.; four grandchildren, Kelly Petz and wife, Melanie, Jeremy Foos and wife, Lisa, Angie Timson and husband, Trent, and Jendee Dalton and husband, Robert; 11 great-grandchildren, Nathan Windholz, Nicholas Petz, Kallynn Petz, Cameron Petz, Tyler Timson, Drake Timson, Grant Timson, Cody Foos, Morgan Foos, Gratton Dalton and Rennick Dalton; and a great-great-grandchild, Easton Windholz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Reinhold Steitz, Victor Steitz and Eberhardt Steitz; a sister, Verneta Healzer; and an infant sister, Leona Steitz.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Otis; burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in La Crosse City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday with family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, and from 10 to 10:50 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

A prayer will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association or the National Kidney Foundation Inc. in care of the funeral home.
