Leo Joseph Schmidt, 89, died Sunday, July 13, 2014, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Inman, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

He was born Dec. 19, 1924, in Liebenthal to John and Anna (Heronema) Schmidt.

He married Dorothy "Dottie" Dreher on Jan. 13, 1947, in Schoenchen. He worked for the Kansas Highway of Engineers (January 1946 to May 1952), Reed Roller Bit Co. (May 1952 to 1954), and Esfeld Trucking Co. (November 1954 to November 1955) before joining Smith Tool International in November 1955. He retired from Smith Tool in January 1981 after 26 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II in the European-African Middle Eastern Theater as a private first class.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, George Schmidt, Fort Smith, Ark., and Mike Schmidt, Greeley, Colo.; four daughters, Dianna Koerner, Hays, Karen Harper, Good Year, Ariz., Patricia "Trish" Schartz, Great Bend, and Joan Barrett, Wichita; a sister, Annie Ziegler, Beloit; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend; burial in Great Bend Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend.

A vigil/rosary will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Holy Family School in care of the funeral home.
