Louise (Evenson) Hamby, 99, formerly of Hays, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2013.

She was born Feb. 8, 1914, in rural Greenwood County to Christian and Lena (Erickson) Evenson. She was a 1935 graduate of Eureka High School, graduated from Fort Hays Kansas State College in 1959 with a bachelor of science in education and received a master of science degree in 1965.

She married Lawrence McClure Hamby on May 24, 1935, in Eureka. He preceded her in death Jan. 28, 1967.

She spent the majority of her teaching career educating special-needs students whom many thought were unteachable. She was an advocate for children others did not want to educate and did so with love and dedication. During her teaching career, she was nominated for Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America Award in 1973. She received the Outstanding Elementary Teacher of the Year Award in 1973. Between 1959 and 1982, she received the Alumni Distinguished Service Award along with Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Sorority of Women Educators Award. She enjoyed a distinguished career as a special-education teacher in the Hays school system from 1959 until retirement in 1982.

After retirement, she traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Alaska, and then moved to Colorado to live with her son and daughter-in-law until a year before her death. She enjoyed mountains and wildlife she could see on a daily basis.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hays, National Education Association, Kansas National Education Association, Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority and the Republican Party.

Survivors include three sons, Donald Lawrence Hamby, Elizabeth, Colo., Dennis Lee Hamby, Bonita Springs, Fla., and James Douglas Hamby and wife, Carol, Parker, Colo.; a daughter, Barbara Louise (Hamby) Murphy and husband, Carlos, Hutchinson; a sister, Leona Stroud, Wichita (who later died Sept. 13, 2013); seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Otis Evenson, Leonard Evenson, Charles Evenson and Oacar Evenson; and four sisters, Lida Moreland, Jennie Turner, Ora Stovall and Fern Wernli.

A celebration of her life will be at 10 a.m. Sept. 28 at Fort Hays Memorial Gardens, 1243 Noose Road, Hays, KS 67601.
