Mary Jane Chlumsky, 65, retired teacher for Grants Cibola County School in Grants N.M., died Monday, Jan. 30, 2012, at Hays Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 24, 1946 in Cumberland, Wis., to Raymond and Glenna Glessing. She attended grade schools in both Wisconsin and Texas. She was a 1964 graduate of Great Bend High School and in 1969 graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree from Fort Hays State University. She continued her education and received a master's degree in counseling from FHSU in 1976.

She married Michael Lee Chlumsky in 1975. She began her teaching career in Kansas in 1970 and worked as a teacher in Stockton and at Fort Larned State Hospital in 1977. She later worked as a Youth Court Probation Officer in Wyandotte County and for the city of Olathe. She and her family later moved and settled in Grants New Mexico, where she became a teacher in the Grants Cibola County School. She continued to teach until her illness forced her to retire early in 2011.

Survivors include two sons, Mike Chlumsky Jr. and wife, Melissa, Rush Center, and Travis Chlumsky and wife, Denise, Las Cruces, N.M.; a daughter, Ceanna Chlumsky, Hays; two sisters, Elizabeth Flynt, Dodge City, and Mae Glessing, Seattle; and six grandchildren, Dalton, Aryanna, Jake and Aubrey, all of Rush Center, and Sophia and Chloe, both of Las Cruces.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine.

Family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service Friday at the funeral home.
