Paul Richard Nieman, 70, Gem, died Thursday, May 29, 2014, at his home.

He was born Sept. 2, 1943, in Grinnell to Nicholas and Lucy (Broeckelman) Nieman. He was a 1961 graduate of Grinnell High School and attended Fort Hays State University.

He was a school bus driver for Golden Plains School District. He was a U.S. Army veteran, where he did active duty in Vietnam. He received a Purple Heart along with several other honors during his service in the Army.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as Fire Chief for Gem Fire Department.

Survivors include three sons, Ron Nieman and wife, Whitney, Colwich, Denny Nieman and wife, Traci, Gem and Greg Nieman and wife, Ericka, Edmond, Okla.; two daughters, Mindy Christensen and husband, Parker, Rexford, and Julie Ziegelmeier and husband, Warren, Gem; five brothers, Jerry Nieman and wife, Helen, Golden, Colo., Jim Nieman and wife, Pat, Kenny Nieman, Garden City, Lawrence Nieman and wife, Judy, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Raymond Nieman and wife, Kathy, Hays; a sister, Jean Loader and husband, Don, Salina; 12 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Alvan "Tiny;" and two sisters, Erma Louise Nieman and Alma Gillispie.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rexford Community Church; followed by a gravesite service in Gem Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Paul Nieman Memorial Fund in care of Baalmann Mortuary, P.O. Box 391, Colby, KS 67701.
