Raymond James Mazanec

Raymond James Mazanec, 95, Hays, died Thursday, July 19, 2012, at Hays Medical Center.

He was born April 24, 1917, in Brainard, Neb., to Adolf and Hattie (Kobza) Mazanec. He was a 1939 graduate of Colby High School.

He married Josephine Horinek on May 1, 1945. He was a mechanic for the state of Kansas highway department. He served in the 7th Air Force from 1942 to 1945, serving during World War II.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, both of Hays, St. Joseph Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus St. Joseph Council No. 1325.

Survivors include his wife, Hays; three daughters, Caroline Hilmes, WaKeeney, Antonetta "Tony Jo" Lang, Hays, and Ramona Young and husband, Bruce, Lakewood, Colo.; a brother, Albin Mazanec, Colby; two sisters, Helen Horinek, Colby, and Sister Rita Ann Mazanec, Concordia; five grandchildren, Bill Hilmes and wife, Elizabeth, Joey Lang, Dianna Ficken and husband, Kirk, Matthew Young and wife, Amanda, and Stephanie Young; and seven great-grandchildren, Josh, Bryce and Calvin Ficken, Gage Hilmes, and Kaylee, Leah and Hayden Young.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James Mazanec; two sisters, Mary Mazanec and Celestine Seivcrt; and two sons-in-law, Francis Lang and Larry Hilmes.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays; burial at 4 p.m. in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Atwood, with military honors.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Monday, both at Brock's North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601.

A St. Joseph Council Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 6 p.m. Sunday, followed by a vigil at 6:30 p.m., both at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice in care of the funeral home.
