Richard R. Kathol, 81, died Saturday, June 30, 2012, at Hays Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 17, 1931, in Hartington, Neb., to Paul and Theresia (Miick) Kathol. He was a 1948 graduate of Hartington High.

He married LaVonne Doane on April 15, 1952. She preceded him in death in 1993. They moved to Hays in 1964, opening Kathol Roofing and Sheet Metal. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Korean War.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays.

Survivors include his children, Pam Deffibaugh and husband, David, and Sharon Sims, all of Sherman Texas, Brian and wife, LuCinda, and Brad, all of Wichita, Reginald, Hays, and Tim and wife, Ann, Omaha, Neb.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Gerald, Roland and Carroll; and two sisters, Coletta Everton and Shirley Modeen.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays; inurnment in St. Joseph Cemetery, with military honors by Hays Veteran of Foreign Wars.

Memorials are suggested to Cancer Council of Ellis County or Humane Society of the High Plains in care of Brock's North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601.
