Robert "Bob" Joseph Bongartz, 76, Ellis, died Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Trego Manor, WaKeeney.
He was born Dec. 19, 1937, in Trego County. He attended Sunflower Country School in Trego County and was a 1955 graduate of Ellis High School.
He retired from the Ellis County Road Department. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1956 to 1958.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Ellis Council No. 02133 and the Victoria Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include a brother, George Bongartz and wife, Lillian, Ellis; three sisters, Christina Bollig and husband, Julius, WaKeeney, Anna Marie Davidson, Cloverdale, Ore., and Betty Lou Honas, Council Grove; a sister-in-law, Delores Bongartz, Ellis; 24 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, William Bongartz Jr.; and a brother-in-law, John Honas.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Ellis; burial in the church cemetery, with military honors courtesy of the Ellis VFW.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday, both at Keithley Funeral Chapel, 400 E. 17th, Ellis, KS 67637.
A vigil and Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, both at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's School in care of the funeral home.
