Rolla Derrell Joy

Rolla Derrell Joy, 98, of Hays, Kansas passed away Saturday, October 12 at the Meridian Retirement Home in Temple, Texas. Derrell is coming home to Ellis County and the Buckeye Community he so dearly loved and served.
Mr. Joy was born on May 18, 1915 to Rolla and Anna Joy at the homestead. His father then moved his growing family of six children to their own home still standing north of Hays. Mr. Joy graduated from Hays High School in 1933. On September 5, 1938 he married Loretta Schmidt and raised his own family on another nearby farm and lived there with his wife for 62 years. In 2000 he moved to the retirement village in Temple, Texas.
Derrell was preceded in death by an infant son, Derrell Joseph; his parents; three sisters, Margaret, Florence, and Mary Ann; and one brother, Walter.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta of Temple, Texas; one sister, Ruth Buehler of Marietta, Georgia; three sons, Ronald and wife Janet of Arlington Heights, Illinois, Donald and wife Linda of Granite Shoals, Texas, Stephen and wife Jo of Temple, Texas; eight grandchildren, Tracy, Mark, Michael, Lisa, Debbie, Lesli, Todd, and Ashley; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Joy loved his farm and farming. Woodworking was a favorite winter hobby, and his children and grandchildren treasure beautiful pieces of furniture he made from trees grown on his farm. For many years, Mr. Joy also enjoyed bowling, once carrying a 200 average. He also played golf until he was 93 and could shoot his age. Derrell and Loretta traveled widely with friends and family, especially, since their sons kept moving around the world.
Later in Temple, his wife and he enjoyed playing bridge and dancing at the Meridian. He loved to entertain his entire family on Easter at the Meridian.
Mr. Joy's remarkable life experiences spanned from horse drawn plows on the family homestead to airline flights to Atlanta and Chicago in his 90's.
On this past September 5, Derrell and Loretta celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary.
His life will be celebrated with a funeral mass at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays. Inurnment will be in the St. Hyacinth Cemetery, near the intersection of Hyacinth and Buckeye roads. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9:00 am until service time.
