Rosalind Anna Desmarteau, 88, Hays, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, at her daughter's house.
She was born Dec. 24, 1923, in Hays to Howard "Casey" and Matilda Leiker Houser.
She married Dorious "John" Desmarteau on Jan. 6, 1947, in Hays. He preceded her in death Aug. 5, 2012.
She attended Girls Catholic High School. She left school to work at Boeing during Word War II. She was a true "Rosie the Riveter."
She and her husband farmed in Damar, lived shortly in Wyoming, then settled in Hays. She was a homemaker and worked shortly as a salesperson.
She loved the outdoors and would spend time tending to the lawn and flower garden. She loved watching sports on TV with John, playing pitch and doing crossword puzzles. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Altar Society Christian Mothers and St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Toepfer, Hays; a sister, Thelma King, Hays; three grandchildren, Matthew Glassman and wife, Haylee, Bridgeport, Conn., Andrea Paul and husband, Landon, and Anthony Glassman and girlfriend, Lexi Copeland, all of Hays; a great-grandchild, Isabelle Glassman, Bridgeport; a step-grandson, Russell Toepfer wife, Kitty, and children Emma, Luke and Jack, Olathe; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Harry "Buck" Houser; a sister, Charlotte Weltz; and son-in-law, Thomas L. Toepfer.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays; burial in the church cemetery.
A combined Altar Society Christian Mothers and VFW Auxiliary service will be at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, followed by a parish vigil service at 6:30 p.m.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and from 2 p.m. until time of service Monday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to Hays Middle School or HaysMed Hospice in care of the funeral home.
