Sarah Elizabeth (Houck) Ward, 88, Ellis, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at Hays Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 29, 1923, in Independence to Frank M. and Helen (Halsey) Houck. She graduated from Independence High School and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas. She also was the president of Chi Omega Sorority when she was enrolled at KU in Lawrence. She earned a master's degree in counseling from Fort Hays State University.

She married Dr. Gerald L. Ward in 1947, in Independence. He preceded her death Dec. 14, 1967. She was a homemaker and worked for Fort Hays State University as the executive secretary to the Alumni Department.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hays, and attended Ellis Congregationalist Church. She was a PEO member, Ellis School Board member, and Fort Hays State University alumni member.

Survivors include three sons, Les Ward, DDS, and wife, Kathleen, Hays, Jonathan Ward and wife, Mary, Leawood, and Dr. Thomas Ward, Little Rock, Ark.; a daughter, Sara Klementis and husband, Robert, Parker, Colo.; and six grandchildren, Twig, Nathaniel, Kelsey, Halsey, Dylan and Samuel.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Frank H. Houck; and a sister, Cynthia Rector.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Presbyterian Church, Hays; private family inurnment will be at a later date.

Following services, the family invites all to join them for fellowship and lunch at the church.

Keithley Funeral Chapel, 400 E. 17th, Ellis, KS 67637, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the Alumni Association at Fort Hays State University or the Nursing Department at FHSU.
