The Rev. Steve S. Burkholder, 66, Augusta, died Wednesday, July 30, 2014.

He was born Sept. 27, 1947, in Denver to C.R. (Bob) and Doris (Sherratt) Burkholder.

He was an ordained minister for more than 36 years. He believed in preaching the true message of the cross. His many talents included landscaping, singing and playing guitar with his wife of 43 years, Donna (Messer) Burkholder and their children.

They had a gospel quartet with singing ministry with Donna's parents. In his early years, he worked as a butcher at Burks Market in Plainville. He also enjoyed working with his father-in-law building signs.

Survivors include his 97-year-old mother, Hays; a son, Jim Burkholder and wife, Gayla, Olathe, Colo.; a daughter, Hayley Hummel and husband, Jeff, Tulsa, Okla.; two brothers, Robert Burkholder and wife, Michael, Rio Rancho, N.M.; and Bruce Burkholder, Hays; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five nieces; and many longtime friends.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Plainville.

Memorials are suggested to American Kidney Foundation or American Heart Association.
