Theresa Dean Nixon, 87, formerly of Hays, KS, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012, at Valley Manor Nursing Home, Montrose, CO.

She was born in Oklahoma City, OK, on May 5, 1925, to John Luther Ferguson and Edna Lucille (Gibson).

She graduated from Classen High School in Oklahoma City, OK, with the Class of 1943. After high school, she worked as a secretary for Travelers Insurance Co. in Oklahoma City. She married Richard "R.P." Paul Nixon on Feb. 12, 1944. He died Feb. 2, 2002. In 1951, R.P.'s job required they move to Russell, KS, where they lived until 1979. Then they moved to Hays.

Theresa loved golfing, tap dancing, entertaining friends and family, traveling the world and painted for many years. She was active in volunteer work, specifically the Pink Ladies Auxiliary doing crafts, etc., to help raise money for Hays Medical Center. She also was a member of the Red Hat Ladies in Hays, the women's golf group at Smoky Hill Country Club and the Women's Auxiliary for the VFW. She especially enjoyed spending time at Wilson Lake with her family and getting together with her female friends on a regular basis.

She is survived by her children, Paul D. Nixon of Hays, KS; Karen "Jesse" S. Nixon of Montrose, CO; Dan A. and Judy A. Nixon of Hays, KS; and Brian J. Nixon of Hays, KS; three grandchildren, Darci L. Gonsalves of Maui, Hawaii, Nicole R. White and Andrew "Drew" White of Okinawa-Shi, Okinawa, Japan, Sean A. and Haley Nixon, of Hays, KS; three great-grand children, Caden White, Kalani Gonsalves, and Kili Gonsalves.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one infant son, John Luther; and two sisters, Shirley Leslie and Pat Fowler.

Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 6, 2012, at Mount Allen Cemetery in Hays, KS.

Memorials are to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado or the American Cancer Society.
