LaVerne "Vernie" Unrein, 80, Hays, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2012, at Hays Good Samaritan New Horizons.

He was born May 20, 1932, in La Crosse to Carl and Lidwina (Zimmerman) Unrein.

He married Juliana Dreher on Sept. 10, 1951.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, Knights of Columbus Council No. 4166, and Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Assembly, Hays.

Survivors include his wife, Hays; two sons, Darrell Unrein, and wife, Norene, Hays, and Richard Unrein, and wife, Gerry, Great Bend; four daughters, Verna Moorhous, Gardner, Vera Bruner, Peculiar, Mo., Vicky Unrein, Miami, Okla., and Venita Hernandez, Aurora, Colo.; three brothers, George Unrein, Hays, Lyle Unrein, Henderson, Nev., and Tim Unrein, Kansas City, Kan.; three sisters, Alice Schmeidler, and husband, Cyril, Hays, Sister Eleanor Unrein and Sister Charlotte Unrein, Great Bend; three granddaughters, Lisa Linenberger Stewart and husband, Andy, Red Rock, Ariz., Diana Unrein, Coffeyville, and Lacey Unrein, Hays; five grandsons, David Linenberger and wife, Tera, Olathe, Terry Jones II, Raytown, Mo., Dylan Unrein and Matthew Bruner, both of Great Bend, and Tanner Unrein, Hays; and a great-grandchild, Noah Linenberger, Olathe.

He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Unrein, on June 10, 1986; his mother, Lidwina Unrein, on Feb. 7, 1998; a sister, Ann Rohn, on Jan. 7, 1997; and a brother, Charles Unrein, on Jan. 13, 2003.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Liebenthal.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, both at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine.

A vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, followed by a combined Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m., all at funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Catholic Church or to Alzheimer's research, in care of the funeral home.
