Vernon Glenn 'Coach' Conner

Vernon Glenn "Coach" Conner, 83, McCracken, died Saturday, May 12, 2012, at Ness County Hospital, Ness City.

He was born Oct. 17, 1928, in rural McCracken to Lloyd and Hattie (Ree) Conner. He graduated from Fort Hays State University with a bachelor of science degree in industrial arts and physical education. He lettered four years in basketball, receiving all-conference honors the last two years at FHSU.

He married Elizabeth Ann "Liz" Belden on Jan. 23, 1954, in Hays. She preceded him in death April 10, 2004. He began his teaching and coaching career, retiring in May 1984 after 32 years. Most of his teaching and coaching career was spent at McCracken High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean War.

Survivors include a son, Michael Conner and fiance, Shelly Derr, McCracken; a sister, Gail Keady, Goddard; a sister-in-law, Sonja Conner, Andover; three grandchildren, Mitchel Conner, La Crosse, D.J. Conner, Yukon, Okla., and Christi (Conner) Schneider, WaKeeney; and four great-grandchildren, Dallas Schneider and Alyssa Schneider, Bryce Conner and Natalie Conner.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Daniel Conner on June 7, 2006; a brother, Guy Conner; and a brother-in-law, Gene Keady.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church, McCracken; burial in McCracken City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, and from 9:30 to 10:20 a.m. Wednesday the church.

Memorials are suggested to McCracken Country Club or McCracken United Methodist English Hand Bell Choir in care of the funeral home.
