Vernon Jacobs, 85, Overland Park, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012, at Garden Terrace Rest Home, Overland Park.

He was born Aug. 30, 1927, in rural Ellis County to John and Regina (Bieker) Jacobs. He attended country school in rural Ellis County and was a 1945 graduate of Hays High School.

He married Gladys Schmidt on Oct. 11, 1948, in Catharine. Together, they raised their family in Edmond and farmed in Norton and Graham counties for 40 years.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Vern and wife, Sue, Norton, Jan, Edmond, and Dale, Kearney, Neb.; five daughters, Brenda Jacobs, Overland Park, Joan Mann and husband, Kennis, Leawood, Debbie Brandt and husband, Tim, Lawrence, Patty Gilmer, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Pam Woodson, Overland Park; two sisters, Georgine Fisher and Janice Kaba; 17 grandchildren, Doug Roeder and wife, Tracy, Brian Roeder, John Jacobs and wife, Monica, Kelli Quigley and husband, Brad, Wendy Cudnik and husband, Justin, Josh and Zach Mann, Jason Jacobs and wife, Melissa, Jared Jacobs and wife, Tressa, Jessica Bailey and husband, Dustin, Janae Jacobs, Kristin and Austin Gilmer, Kyle Oetken and Parker, Ryan and Bayley Woodson; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harvey Jacobs; four sisters, Alma Leiker, Joyce Jacobs, Vera Milke and Betty Werth; and a granddaughter, Kendra Mann O'Brien.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine.

A vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to American Stroke Association in care of the funeral home.
