Willard W. Hughes, 87, Oakley, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013.
He was born Sept. 2, 1926, in Gove County to Harry and Hazel (Barritt) Hughes. He earned his master plumbers license.
He married Rose Lager on April 9, 1951 in Oakley. He worked in and later owned the family business, Hughes Plumbing, from 1948 to 1996. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1944 to 1946.
He was a member of Kansas State Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Contractors; Oakley Lions Club, serving as a former president; and a former member of Oakley City Council.
After retirement, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends and took up woodworking.
Survivors include his wife, of 62 years, Oakley; three sons, Walter Hughes and wife, Leann, Oakley, Keith Hughes and wife, Renae, Hutchinson, and Roger Hughes and wife, Leigh, Yellville, Alaska; two daughters, Nancy Dietz and husband, Darrell, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Sharon Hughes and Jerry Conroy, Minneapolis; six grandchildren, Craig Dietz, Sean Hughes, Logan Hughes, Nolan Hughes, Cori Dietz-Hughes and Sage Hughes; and two great-grandchildren, Cole Hughes and Brooklynn Hughes.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert; and a sister, Marjorie Hoth.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Oakley; cremation has taken place.
Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Baalmann Mortuary, Oakley.
A vigil will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Catholic School in care of the mortuary.
