Vernita M. Serpan, 90, La Crosse, died Saturday, July 22, 2017, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care, La Crosse.
She was born Oct. 14, 1926, in rural La Crosse to Peter and Pauline (Stecklein) Schaffer. She was a lifelong resident of Rush County and a 1944 graduate of La Crosse High School.
She married Charley Serpan on Nov. 30, 1944, in La Crosse. He preceded her in death June 23, 1997. She was a dispatcher for the Rush County Sheriff’s office prior to retirement.
She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, St. Michael Altar Society, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3147 Ladies Auxiliary, all of La Crosse. She was also involved in the FHSU Senior Companion Program for six years.
Survivors include a son, Darryl Serpan, Hutchinson; three daughters, LaVerda Herbel, Aurora, Colo., Vicky Foos and husband, DeWayne, La Crosse, Kim Taylor and husband, Fred, Victoria; seven grandchildren, Chad Herbel, Scott Herbel, Jeremy Foos, Jendee Dalton, Anna Taylor, Andrew Taylor, and Lucas Taylor; and eight great-grandchildren, Steven Herbel, Ryan Herbel, Cody Foos, Aidan Herbel, Gratton Dalton, Morgan Foos, Chase Herbel, and Rennick Dalton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Rudy Schaffer, and Robert Schaffer; and six sisters, Charlotte Kline, Bertha Oliverius, Esther Schuckman, Jenny Pozalek, Minnie Stejskal, and Mary Urban.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael Catholic Church, La Crosse; burial in the La Crosse City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, and from 9 to 9:50 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
A vigil/rosary will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
