Ronald George Hopkins, 86, Salina, formerly of Garden City and Russell, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017, at Salina Regional Hospital.

He was born April 13, 1931, in Utica to Arthur J. and Eunice (Pevey) Hopkins. He was a 1949 graduate of Utica High School. He attended Fort Hays State University, receiving a bachelor of science degree in physical education and a master degree in educational administration.

He married Sylvia Jo “Jody” Brethauer on Aug. 4, 1957, in Russell. In 1987, he took a position as director of financial aid at Pittsburg State University, retiring in 1996. He was a U.S. Army veteran specializing in Infantry Operations and War Dog training.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; three sons, George Hopkins, Garden City, Greg Hopkins, Twinsburg, Ohio, and Grant Hopkins, Wichita; a sister, Elma Castor, Acworth, Ga.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, Russell; inurnment in Russell City Cemetery, with military rites by the Russell V.F.W. Post No. 6240.

Family will greet guests from 9 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to Russell V.F.W. Post No. 6240 in care of the mortuary.
