Adolph “J.R.” Grabbe Jr., 79, Hays, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2017, at Hays Good Samaritan Society.

He was born Aug. 8, 1938, in Hays to Adolph A. “Sam” Grabbe Sr. and Leona (Weigel) Grabbe. He was a 1957 graduate of St. Joseph Military Academy.

He married Susie Tallman in 1965. He later married Barbara Watts in 1996. He was a parts salesman for S&W Supply and a custodian at Fort Hays State University, making many friends with each job. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, where he worked on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier and was a boxer.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays.

He enjoyed going to the mountains, snow skiing, being outside, and watching his kids’ ball games. He was an avid Royals, Chiefs, and KU fan. His favorite thing was having his grandkids and kids come see him for the holidays. He always enjoyed the gag gifts and jokes.

Survivors include Barbara Grabbe, Hays; his children. Jill Miller and husband, Michael, Kansas City, Amy Grabbe, Brian Watts and RoJene Broeckelman and Julie Sulzman and Shawn, all of Hays, five sisters, Terri Demel, Sun City, Ariz., Carol Osborne and husband, John, Wichita, Judie Ford, Hugoton, Mary Kay Holmes. Kansas City, Kan., and Connie Bourbina and husband, Art, Independence; 10 grandchildren, Elisabeth Miller, Sam Miller, Ethan Grabbe, Maggie Housman, Elise Housman, Cody Watts and wife, Tracy, Cade Watts, Shelby Bach and husband, Andrew, Kirsten Sulzman, and Sydney Sulzman; and two great-granddaughters, Elaina Bach and Sadie Watts.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Bud and Jerry Grabbe.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays; burial in Fort Hays Memorial Gardens Cemetery with military honors by Hays VFW Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, both at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine, Hays, KS 67601.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hays Medical Center in care of the funeral home.
