Irma L. Herl, 82, Hays, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017, at Hays Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 21, 1935, near St. Peter to Herbert “Harry” and Loretta (Denning) Sanders. She was a 1952 graduate of Quinter High School.

She married Leonard Herl on April 20, 1954, in Collyer. They celebrated 63 years of marriage. She was a farmwife and homemaker.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Altar Society at St. Theresa Parish in Dighton and taught fourth-grade catechism class. Growing up on the farm, she would milk her dairy cattle twice daily and had a favorite named Brownie. She loved animals and music and could play many instruments by ear.

Survivors include her husband; Hays; a son, Terence Herl and wife, Tamara, Fountain, Colo.; two daughters, Laurie Dimitry and husband, Ed, Olathe, and Valerie Fischer and husband, Jul, Overland Park; three sisters, Celeste Herl and husband, Moris, Hays, Elsie Loevenstein, Quinter, and Dinah Werth, Hays; a granddaughter, Kaeylarae Herl; and two step-grandchildren, Matt Shull and Andrea Shull.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Doloris Emerick; and a brother, James Sanders.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday, both at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine.

A parish vigil and rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested in her memory to the St. Joseph Church rectory fund in care of the funeral home.
