Robert W. "Bob" Gerstner, 72, Hays, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017, at his home.

He was born Aug. 18, 1945, in Hays to Richard and Florence (Arnhold) Gerstner. He was a 1963 graduate of Victoria High School and lived in Victoria until moving to Hays in 1998. He received his bachelor’s degree in education from Fort Hays State College in 1967 and received his master’s degree of library science from Emporia Sate University in 1973.

He married Twyla Stang on Aug. 20, 1966, in Victoria. He was a high school teacher of history and government at Gorham High School from 1967 to 1972, and a librarian at Russell High School from 1972 to 1984. In the 1980s, he owned and operated the Stop 2 Shop in Ellis and Victoria from 1984 to 1995. Then from 1997 to 2010, he and his son-in-law owned G&L Tire and Automotive until retirement in 2010.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

He was a avid reader of books and newspapers. He enjoyed fishing, the outdoors, traveling and cruises.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, John Gerstner, Kansas City, Kan.; a daughter, Jackie Leiker and husband, Alan, Hays; a brother, Richard Gerstner Jr., Sacramento, Calif.; and two granddaughters, Alexyss Lynn Leiker, Lincoln, Neb., and Darian Rose Leiker, Wichita.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays; inurnment in St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria.

Family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Cline's-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 E. 22nd, Hays, KS 67601, and from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church.

A vigil/rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to Hays Public Library or St. Joseph Catholic Church in care of the mortuary.
