Martin J. “Matt” Staab, 87, Hays, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2017, in Hays.

He was born May 10, 1930, in Catharine to Alois and Rosa (Meier) Staab.

He married Georgine “Jeanie” Befort on Nov. 4, 1953, in Munjor. He worked for C.O. Mammals Grocery Store for 37 years, working in all areas including manager. After working at the grocery store, he went to work for Fort Hays State University at Memorial Union with the custodial staff. He was a U.S. Army National Guard veteran.

He was a member of the American Legion, Immaculate Heart of Mary parish and the Knights of Columbus Council No. 6984.

He enjoyed woodworking and being a handyman. He also was a baseball fan of the Kansas City Royals and had played for the Catharine Owls and the Hays Larks. He was a modest, hardworking family man who believed in his faith and family.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, of the home in Hays; a son, Gary Staab, Hays; two daughters, Sherri Ruder and husband, Rich, Munjor, and Debbie Werth and husband, Dave, Hays; eight grandchildren, Chad Ruder and wife, Jackie, Nichole Sauer and husband, Randy, all of Hays, Landon Staab, Boise, Idaho, Logan Staab, Hays, Brandon Werth and wife, Amanda, Liberty, Mo., and Matthew Werth and wife, Jen, Cory Werth and Tyler Werth, all of Hays; and six great-grandchildren, Shannon and Amy Ruder, Sadie, Connor, Bladyn and Bodhi Werth.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Edwin, Walter, Lawrence and Alfred Staab; and two sisters, Albertine “Tina” Goetz and Irene Rohr.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, Hays; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Monday, both at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601.

A Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, followed by a vigil at 7 p.m., both at the funeral chapel.

Memorials are suggested to St. Nicholas Church, HaysMed Hospice or Masses in care of the funeral .
