Alvin “Al” G. Surmeier, 68, Ellis, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017, at Good Samaritan Society, Ellis, after battling Parkinson’s for many years.
He was born Dec. 26, 1948, in Colby to Tony and Gertrude (Fellhoelter) Surmeier. He was a 1966 graduate of Oakley High School and attended Colby Community College.
He was a Certified Federal Meat Inspector and a Soil Conservation Technician.
He was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Mankato.
He enjoyed playing the accordion, snow skiing, bowling, attending horse races, scratching off tickets, playing cards and swinging on his porch swing while reading the daily newspaper. He was an avid sports fan enjoying the KC Royals, KC Chiefs, Denver Broncos and the K-State Wildcats. Church and family gatherings were things he enjoyed and especially being able to attend his children and grandchildren’s events.
Survivors include a stepson, Manny Motto and wife, Michelle, Deshler, Neb.; two daughters, Michelle Livengood and husband, Levi, Minneapolis, and Brandy Becker and husband, Chris, Ellis; three brothers, Henry Surmeier and wife, Sharen, Springfield, Ore., Fr. Bill Surmeier, Hays, and Tony Surmeier, Colby; a sister, Clara Zimmerman and husband, Ralph, Oakley; 11 grandchildren who knew him as “Papo”, Ashlee, Miranda, Mariah, Manny, Ariana, Carly, Ryley, Micaela, Lauryn, Taelyr and Kamryn; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents,; a sister, Theresa Surmeier; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Surmeier; and a nephew, Michael Surmeier.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Ellis; burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph Cemetery Oakley.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the church.
A combined rosary and vigil will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the wishes of the family to be designated at a later date in care of the funeral home.
