Mary Katherine Schmidt, 87, Hays, died Monday, Nov. 27, 2017, at Via Christi Village.

She was born March 12, 1930, in Eureka to Clarence and Roberta (Bowers) House. In 1936, she moved with her family to Ellis County where she attended Washington Grade School and was a 1948 graduate of Hays High School.

She married Alfred L. Schmidt on Oct. 20. 1948, in Hays. He preceded her in death April 27, 1987. She was a homemaker and did graphic artistry for local photography studios and KAYS and KLOE radio stations.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Secular Franciscan Order for more than 50 years, a volunteer with Right to Life, a religious education teacher for more than 33 years at St. Joseph Catholic Church, and was an original board member of the Mary Elizabeth Maternity Home.

She enjoyed playing cards and spending time with her family.

Survivors include five sons, Mike Schmidt, Manhattan, Larry Schmidt and wife, Melea, and Dan Schmidt and wife, Connie, all of Hays, Randy Schmidt and wife, Marsha, Williamsburg, Va., and John Schmidt and wife, Dana, Hays; a daughter, Karla Ruder and husband, John, Plainville; a sister; Anna Lee Meek, Liberal; 22 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Clarence “Bud” House; a son, Joe Schmidt; a granddaughter, Holly Schmidt; and two daughters-in-law, Sally Schmidt and Kerry Schmidt.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Thursday, both at the Hays Memorial Funeral Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine, Hays, KS 67601.

A Secular Franciscan Order rosary will be at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

A vigil will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
