Marguerite N. Smith-Perfett, 89, North Newton, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2017, at Kidron Bethel Village in North Newton.

She was born Dec. 6, 1928, in Yale, Okla., to Jack B. and Hortense Rankin Smith. She attended Hays High School, graduated from Hutchinson High School and later attended Oklahoma College for Women, Hutchinson Community College and Wichita State University.

She married W.W. Smith. In 1967, she relocated to Warrensburg, Mo., where she later married Raymond F. Perfett on June 3, 1971, in Nebraska City, Neb. He preceded her in death in 1976 and she returned to Newton. She was a reporter for several newspapers through the years in Oklahoma and Kansas, The Pauls Valley Daily Democrat, Great Bend Tribune, Newton Kansan, and Wichita Eagle-Beacon. She won writing awards from the Kansas Woman’s Press Association for her feature writing and women’s pages. She continued to be a writer for the Kansas Senior Press Service for several years.

She was a charter member of Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, Newton, and was involved in many church and community programs through the years.

Survivors include daughter, Mari Melanie Smith Palmer, Chesterfield, Mo.; two grandchildren, Matthew R. Crow, St. Louis, Mo.; and Aily K. Rischar and husband, Chad, Chesterfield; and a great-granddaughter, Dorothy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, David Michael Smith; a brother, Benjamin J. Smith; and a sister, Marjorie B. Pierce.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, Newton; inurnment will take place at a later date beside her parents and sister in Hutchinson Memorial Park Cemetery.

As per requested her body has been donated to University of Kansas Medical Center for research.  

Memorials are suggested to Youthville (EmberHope) Newton Campus and the School of Geriatric Nursing at Hutchinson Community College in care of Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, Newton.
