Verle E. “Doc” Montgomery Jr., 88, Hays, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, at Good Samaritan Society, Hays.

He was born June 24, 1929, in Jamestown to Verle and Kathryn (Haskins) Montgomery Sr. He grew up in Jamestown and attended Mesa College in Grand Junction, Colo.

He married Iris “Rusty” (Russ) on Dec. 14, 1950, in Jamestown. She preceded him in death April 5, 2005. He was a salesman of specialty advertising items for more than 25 years in Hays and the northwest Kansas area. He moved to Hays in 1961, where he was manager of Wards for 13 years and was manager of Sears for nine years. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include two sons, David Montgomery and wife, Susan, Eagan, Minn., and Robert Montgomery, Fayetteville, Alaska; two daughters, Jeanne Miller, Kaw City, Okla., Amy Beam and husband, Greg, Phoenix; a sister, Linda Whitehead, Concordia; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son-in-law, Gary Miller.

A celebration of life will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 E. 22nd, Hays, KS 67601.

Memorials are suggested to Good Samaritan Society of Hays in care of the mortuary.
