Velma Louise Underwood, 83, Russell, died Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at Russell Regional Hospital.

She was born Dec. 7, 1934, in Sumner County to Paul D. and Viola Velma (Hutchins) Myers. She was a graduate of Southwester High School in Waxahachie, Texas, and later attended Fort Hays State University.

She married Lowell Patrick Underwood on Sept. 3, 1951, in Tribune. She was an executive director of Lincoln Manor and Parkside Manor, both in Russell.

Survivors include her husband, of 66 years, of the home; a son, Rick Underwood, Gorham; a brother, Paul E. Myers, Tribune; a sister, Paula Davis, Los Lunas, N.M.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Ron and Randal Underwood.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Otterbein United Methodist Church, Russell; inurnment in Russell City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with family greeting friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, Russell.

Memorials are suggested to KU Med Center Alzheimer's Unit in care of the mortuary.
