Phyllis Dorene Sleichter, 90, Wichita, formerly of Hays and Palco, died Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at Regent Park Rehabilitation and Healthcare in Wichita.
She was born Oct. 23, 1927, in Palco to Hugh and Zelma (Marcotte) Meade. She graduated from Palco High School and attended nursing school at Fort Hays State, and received her teacher’s certificate from FHSU.
She married George H. “Slick” Sleichter on Sept. 20, 1947, in Hays. He preceded her in death March 4, 2010. She taught at Palco Elementary School and was a substitute teacher for many years. She was a housewife, living in Phillipsburg while her husband worked for Kansas Nebraska Gas Co. They later moved back to Palco where they started Slick’s Ditching Service. In 1991, they moved to Hays.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church and Naomi Circle.
She enjoyed being a mother, grandmother, was very faith-filled and giving, was an awesome cook and enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Survivors include a son, Kirk Sleichter and wife, JeanAnn, Wichita; a daughter, Sheryl Terry and husband, Bill, Great Bend; a sister; Jean Berland, Hays; five grandchildren, Angela, Chad, Shawn, Meredith, and Lydia; and six great-grandchildren, Triston, Darby, Kalyssa, Payton, Cameron, and Rocco.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Marion and Harlan Meade.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, Hays; private family burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Palco.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine, Hays, KS 67601 and from 1:30 p.m. until time of service Saturday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to First Evangelical Free Church, Wichita or Gideons International, in care of the funeral home.
