Leonard “Bud” William Slater, 88, Hays, died Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at his home.
He was born Jan. 29, 1930, in Salina to Leonard and Lola (Gray) Slater. He was a 1948 graduate in Englewood, Colo.
He married Shirley G. Bonham June 11, 1955, in Basin, Wyo. He was in the auto parts business for 20 years, which brought moves to Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri after leaving Wyoming in 1969. He also was an over-the-road truck driver for 25 years, worked three years for Furnas County Farms in Beaver City, Neb., followed by working the last 18 years at Walmart. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran in 1950, serving in Korea and being honorably discharged in 1954.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Donald Lee Slater and wife, Connie, Kansas City, Mo.; a daughter, Karen Sue Miller and husband, Bill, Grain Valley, Mo.; a sister, Dixie Zerr, Denver; his special friends, Kathy and Wayne Abrams, Blue Springs, Mo.; and numerous step-children and step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother-in-law; and a step-granddaughter, Jenny Stroemel.
Cremation has taken place; burial will be at a later date in Kansas Veterans Cemetery, WaKeeney.
