Kathleen Kay “Kathy” Ukele, 59, Hays, died unexpectedly Saturday, May 26, 2018, while spending time with family and friends at the place she enjoyed most, Wilson Lake.
She was born Oct. 18, 1958, in Oberlin to Earnest Keith and Imogene (Harold) Gallatin. She was a 1976 graduate of Decatur County High School.
She was a long-time office manager at Karst Water Well before graduating from Fort Hays State University in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. She was the treatment director at Smoky Hill Foundation from 2001 to 2013 when she became the executive director.
She enjoyed quilting, traveling to Nebraska to spend time with her sisters, cooking, spending time with her grandchildren and being at Wilson Lake.
Survivors include husband, Mel Karst, Hays; seven sons, Jason Ukele and wife, Stephanie, and Corey Ukele and wife, Brandy, all of Salina, Dylan Karst and Ben Karst and wife, Joan, all of Hays, Mark Karst and wife, Nikki, Kansas City, Jon Karst, Big Sur, Calif., and Clayton Karst, Mission; two sisters, Debbie Macfee, Oberlin, and Linda Jackson, Cortez, Colo.; and nine grandchildren, Ike Ukele, Cooper Goodrow, Connor and Coltyn Ukele, Katrina and Kailey Delimont, Hendrix and Jaxon Karst and Cadence Karst.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Connie Gallatin and Jo Marintzer.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9:30 a.m. until time of service Thursday, both at the funeral chapel.
Memorials are suggested to Humane Society of the High Plains in care of the chapel.
