Thelma C. King, 97, Hillsboro, formerly of Hays, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2018, at Hillsboro Community Hospital, Hillsboro. She moved to Parkside Assisted Living in Hillsboro in 2013 to be closer to family. 

She was born July 15, 1921, in Hays to Howard “Casey” and Matilda (Leiker) Houser.

She married Billy Frank King on Dec. 10, 1938. He preceded her in death March 26, 1989. She was a devoted wife and mother. Although she never worked outside the home, while her husband was Sheriff of Ellis County, she provided delicious homemade meals for the prisoners.

She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and St. Joseph Catholic Church.

She enjoyed watching Kansas State, the Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs.

Survivors include a daughter, Billie Strunk and husband, David, Valley Center; a grandson, Troy Strunk, Valley Center; a great-grandson, Tanner Strunk, Valley Center; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Kay Artman; her parents; a brother, Harry “Buck” Houser; and two sisters, Charlotte Weltz and Rosalind Desmarteau.

Visitation will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine, Hays, KS 6760.

A rosary will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial in Mount Allen Cemetery.
