Mary Lavina "Aunt Teach" Scheuerman, 88, Bison, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2018, after a brief illness.
She was born March 30, 1930, in Larned to John F. and Essie Pauline (Baugher) Welch. She graduated from Garfield High School and continued her education at Bethany College in Lindsborg, where she received a bachelor of arts in education degree. She later received a master’s degree from Fort Hays State College.
She married Glenn K. Scheuerman on June 6, 1954, in Garfield. He preceded her in death Feb. 22, 2007. She taught school in Pratt and Otis-Bison USD No. 403 in Bison for many years, prior to her retirement.
She enjoyed all children, and even after retiring Lavina tutored students, especially with reading. She enjoyed to read and bake for others.
She was a member of the National Education Association, the Kansas National Education Association, USD No. 403 Teacher's Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, the International Reading Association, the Joy Club and the Sunshine Extension Unit, and was a former member of Dorian and Priscilla Club and the Village Club. She was a member of Bison United Methodist Church and Bison United Methodist Women.
Survivors include a brother, David B. Welch, Larned; two sisters, Edwyna Barstow and husband, Robert, Franklin, N.Y. and Linda Drews, Oklahoma City; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, David Glenn Scheuerman.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Bison United Methodist Church; burial in Lone Star Cemetery, near Bison.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday with family present to greet friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse and from 9:30 to 10:20 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to Youthville Residential and Foster Care Services of EmberHope, Newton, Sunflower Diversified Services, Great Bend or Bison United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.
