Alvin Joseph Dortland
Alvin Joseph Dortland, 96, Victoria, died Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Hays Medical Center.
He was born Oct. 9, 1917, in Gorham to Joseph and Hattie (Waudby) Dortland.
He married Irene Robben on Oct. 24, 1939, in Kansas City, Kan. He was a farmer and stockman.
He was a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church, St. Fidelis Council No. 1867 Third Degree Knights of Columbus and St. Fidelis Assembly No. 0305 Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.
He was an avid baseball fan and player. He played baseball in Gorham and even played when he was in his 60s. He attended the Denver Stock Show with his registered Hereford cattle, and he enjoyed fishing, especially with his grandsons.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 75 years, Victoria; a daughter, Kathalie Hoffman and husband, Tom, Hays; two sisters, Harriet Theilen, Steamboat Springs, Colo., and Anna Sherwood, Ocala, Fla.; two grandsons, Tracy Hoffman and wife, Stacey, Leawood, and Troy Hoffman, Overland Park; and two great-grandsons, Grant and Gavin Hoffman, both of Leawood.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Joseph "Bob" Dortland; and two brothers, Hubert and Elmer.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Victoria; burial in St. Ann Cemetery, Walker.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Brock's Funeral Home, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601, and from 9 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the church.
A combined Third and Fourth Degree Victoria Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, followed by a vigil at 7 p.m., all at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to St. Fidelis Catholic Church or per the family's wishes to be designated at a later date in care of the funeral home.
