Celeste Younger Pfannenstiel


Celeste Younger Pfannenstiel, 85, Longmont, Colo., died Thursday, April 24, 2014, at her home.

She was born April 8, 1929, in Hays to Lawrence and Anna Younger. She married Walter Pfannenstiel on June 6, 1949. They moved to Longmont in 1955.

Celeste  was  former owner of the Gateway Cafe in Lyons from 1981 to 1997. The popular Main Street restaurant was a gathering place for locals, serving home-style breakfasts and lunches. Prior to owning  her business in Lyons, Celeste worked at the F.W. Woolworth store in Longmont at the lunch counter. She then worked for the Longmont Police Department as a meter maid and became the force's first matron.

She devoted much of her free time to her church and was a past president for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2601 Ladies Auxiliary in Longmont. She was an avid crotchetier, creating more than 400 colorful afghans for friends, family and acquaintances.  

Survivors include her children, Beverly Metz and husband, Ronald, Eva Feese, Walter Pfannenstiel Jr. and wife, Diane, Dora Niehus and husband, Chuck, and Allen Pfannenstiel and wife, Terry Eden; a brother, Lawrence Younger, Hays; a sister, Florence Wear, Hays; five grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; her parents; two sisters, Rosemary Koirth and Dorothy Mermis; a son-in-law, Walter Feese; a grandson, Butch Feese; and companion John Ramey.

Services were April 30, 2014, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with burial at Mountain View Cemetery, Longmont.
