Elaine Frances (Hammerschmidt) Sunley, 74, Hays, died Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at her home.

She was born Jan. 2, 1940, in Victoria to Joseph and Mathilda (Kuhn) Hammerschmidt.

She married Earl L. Sunley on Sept. 3, 1962, in Hays. She was a homemaker. She was a Senior Companion for three years, a volunteer at Birthright, Community Assistance Center and the lunch programs at Holy Family Elementary School and Thomas More Prep-Marian High School.

She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and Hays Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

She enjoyed playing cards, polka music and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her former husband, Earl L. Sunley, Hays; five sons, Kevin Sunley, Aventura, Fla., Steve Sunley and wife, Kerri, Eric Sunley and Duane Sunley, all of Hays, and Brian Sunley and wife, Leni, Salina; a daughter, Pam Cain, Topeka; two brothers, Leon Hammerschmidt and wife, Jeannie, and Bill Hammerschmidt and wife, Cecile, all of Plainville; four sisters, Alice Arnold and Mary Hammersmith and husband, Al, all of Hutchinson, JoAnn Jacobs and husband, Bill, La Crosse, and Theresa Convoy and husband, Mark, Topeka; three sisters-in-laws, Lila Hammerschmidt, Hays, Nora Hammerschmidt, Plainville, and Rhonda Hammerschmidt, Keyes, Okla.; a brother-in-law, Ron Heidel, Wichita; and seven grandchildren, Jonathan Sunley, Brady Sunley, Noah Sunley, Kayla Urban, Kelsey Cain, Krystina Sunley and Kinzie Sunley.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Pete, Bob, Leo, Ernie and Tom Hammerschmidt; and a sister, Rosie Heidel.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 18th and Vine, Hays; burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday, both at Clines Mortuary of Hays, 1919 E. 22nd, Hays, KS 67601.

A vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, followed by a VFW Auxiliary memorial services/rosary at 7 p.m., all at the mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hays Medical Center in care of the mortuary.
