Elberta M. Pekarek
Elberta M. Pekarek, 97, Topeka, formerly of Zurich and Wilber, Neb., died Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, at Topeka Adult Care Center.
She was born May 14, 1916, northeast of Zurich to James Vaelav and Bessie (Slansky) Bartos. She was a 1935 graduate of Plainville High School.
She married Frank Pekarek on Aug. 30, 1940, in Wilber. He preceded her in death Oct. 9, 1944. She worked in a drug store in Wilber and was a homemaker and caregiver.
She was a member of United Methodist Church, Zurich, and Mater Dei (Holy Name) Catholic Parish, Topeka. She was a gold star member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post No. 8871, Plainville, and a member of the WFLA (ZCBJ) Lodge, Timken.
She enjoyed Czech music and polka waltzes. She was a first-generation Czech-American.
Survivors include a son, Larry F. Pekarek and wife, Eileen, Topeka; four grandchildren, Michael, Topeka, Marsha Furman and husband, Mike, Alma, Laura Perron and husband, Leo, Topeka, and Mary Goodwin and husband, Dave, Overland Park; and 10 great-grandchildren, Jesse, Amanda, Lindsey, Josh, Joseph, Alex and Isabella Perron, and Nicholas, Aaron and Henry Goodwin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Clarence, Herman and Harry Bartos; and four sisters, Bessie Rostocil, Ogla Brison, Alice Beck and Blanche Tichy.
She will lie in state from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday, where family will receive friends at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, Topeka.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home; graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Wilber Czech Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to Mater Dei Parish for Masses or Alzheimer's Association in care of the funeral home.
