George Unrein


George Unrein, 77, Hays, died Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at Hays Good Samaritan Society.

He was born Nov. 17, 1935, in La Crosse to Carl and Lidwina (Zimmerman) Unrein.

He married Mary Jane Braun. He owned and operated George's Car & Truck Repair.

He was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church and Schoenchen Knights of Columbus Council No. 4166.

He enjoyed playing pinochle, polka music, visiting the family cabin and boating at Cedar Bluff, his work and taking care of his yard, and he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons, Mark Unrein and wife, Lora, and Kevin Unrein, all of Hays; four daughters, Jane Geist and JoAnn Wasinger and husband, Rick, all of Hays, Jerilyn Draper, Bonita Springs, Fla., and Jolene Eberle and husband, Kyle, Spearville; two brothers, Lyle Unrein and wife, Mildred, Henderson, Nev., and Tim Unrein and wife, Connie, Kansas City, Kan.; three sisters, Alice Schmeidler and husband, Cyril, Hays, and Sister Eleanor Unrein and Sister Charlotte Unrein, both of Great Bend; his special friend, Sheila Stewart, Smith Center; 12 grandchildren, Landon Geist, Blue Springs, Mo., Matthew Geist, Lusaka, Zambia, Kimberly Geist, Hays, Jacob Wasinger, Lawrence, Joshua Wasinger, Hays, Jared Wasinger, Manhattan, Shane Draper and Megan Draper, both of Hays, Austin Unrein, Madison Unrein and Hannah Unrein, all of Hays, and Spencer Eberle, Spearville; and two great-grandchildren, Brant Stokes and Wesley Stokes, both of Hays.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ann Rohr; and two brothers, Charles Unrein and LaVerne Unrein.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, Hays; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Friday, both at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine.

A vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, followed by a Schoenchen Third Degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m., both at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Alzheimers Research or Hays Good Samaritan Society Alzheimer Unit in care of the funeral home.
