Herbert C. Hoover
Herbert C. Hoover, 85, Hays, died Sunday, July 6, 2014, at Sterling House, Hays.
He was born March 4, 1929, in Grinnell, Iowa, to Frederick D. and Grace (Cline) Hoover.
He married Wilma J. Rupp on Jan. 21, 1950, in Hays. He was general manager of Rupp's Inc. John Deere dealership until his retirement in 1985.
He was a member of the Sunflower Retriever Club, and the National American Hunt and Retrieve Association. He loved to go hunting with his black labs Gunner and Crash. He was a member of the National Hot Rod Association and loved drag racing with his top alcohol dragster. He was an avid airplane lover.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Don Hoover and wife, Jolene, and Fred Hoover and Sharley Benham, all of Hays; five daughters, Mary Metz and husband, Bill, Berryton, Carol Neihardt and husband, Nelson, Eudora, Connie Sheldon, Hays, Sue Ihde and husband, Bob, Hays, and Janet Kuhn and husband, Ed, Walker; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ward and Harlan Hoover; two sisters, Velda Hoover and Esther Diehm; a son-in-law, Mike Schlageck; and a great-grandson, Xavier Shuler.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, both at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine.
A parish vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
