Melvin L. Normandin, 86, Hays, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2014, at Hays Medical Center.

Melvin L. Normandin, 86, Hays, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2014, at Hays Medical Center.

He was born June 12, 1928, in Menlo to Norman C. and Irene (Benoit) Normandin.

He married Joanna Burton on Sept. 1, 1953, in Damar. He was a school bus driver for more than 30 years, a farmer, manager of Berland Oil and owned Normandin Liquor. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War.

He was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays, a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Damar, a member of the Knights of Columbus Third Degree Council No. 2365 and the Bishop Cunningham Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He loved doing carpentry and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Ken Normandin and wife, Janet, Valley Center, and Joe Normandin and wife, Nancy, Edmond, Okla.; two daughters, Vali Leis and husband, Dan, Hays, and Mary Belisle and husband, Paul, Damar; six brothers, Louis Normandin and wife, Irene, Hays, Duane Normandin and wife, Lavonne, Plainville, Eugene Normandin and wife, Helen, Damar, Alfred Normandin, Poquoson, Va., Donald Normandin and wife, Linda, Damar, and Richard Normandin and wife, Mallone, Hays; three sisters, Jeannie Bellerive, Plainville, Mary Ann Meyers, Denver, and Della Huhmann, Tuscumbia, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Damar; burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the church and from 9 to 9:50 a.m. Thursday at the church. Parish vigil will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday followed by a family rosary.

Memorials are suggested to the Knights of Columbus or to masses.
