No longer a supporter

I am a Kansas corn and sorghum grower, a business owner, and a constituent of Congressman Tim Huelskamp.

For the past four years, I have supported Congressman Huelskamp with my vote and my check book. I believed we needed a fighter in Washington, D.C., someone who would put western Kansas interests before personal politics, and I put my trust in him to vote the way he thought best represented our district and our values.

When Tim went to Washington, he immediately was placed on the Agriculture Committee, just like his predecessors. However, it came as a surprise to me to learn he was removed from the committee after a single term in office. Kansas had representation on the Ag Committee for more than 100 years until now and for good reason. Our district tops the nation in agriculture products sold. To make matters worse, he voted against the farm bill despite the cries of nearly every farmer and farming organization in the state.

After a recent public appearance, I voiced my concerns to Tim one-on-one. I approached him, both as a constituent and a farmer. I told him I was a supporter, but I had a few concerns with some of his recent votes. I was prepared for a political answer about ideology and principle; what I received, however, was much different.

Congressman Huelskamp lost his temper with me. He threatened me and my business by saying "I will make you pay when I get back to D.C." He swore to "remember me for not supporting his candidacy" in Washington. After seeing this side of our Congressman, I now understand his track record of being kicked off nearly every committee he has been assigned to, going back over a decade to his state legislative days.

With Congressmen like this in Washington, is it no wonder why D.C. is broken? I urge the people of Kansas' First District to vote against Tim Huelskamp on Aug. 5. We deserve a congressman who fights for Kansas, and not for himself.
