Americans for Prosperity needs to get its facts straight about the Renewable Portfolio Standard. I, like many of you, received a postcard from AFP claiming renewables had caused increases in electric rates.
Yet, according to the KCC, the state agency responsible for regulating energy rates, renewables caused only 1.7 percent of the increase (www.kcc.state.ks.us/pi/2013_retail_rate_impact_report.pdf).
AFP just is looking out for its big donors, the Koch brothers, who seem to be worried about competition from wind energy. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, wind energy is projected to cost less per kilowatt-hour by 2018 than energy made from coal and natural gas (www.eia.gov/forecasts/aeo/electricity_generation.cfm).
Facts matter. We should thank our state representatives for voting to support the Renewable Portfolio Standard and urge our state senators to do likewise.
