Statistics from SRS last year indicate more than 30 percent of people in Kansas eligible for food stamps, in terms of income and circumstance, do not apply. As such, food stamps represent an under-utilized program here in Kansas.
The reasons for this remain unclear.
But if you need help feeding yourself or feeding your family, you should apply -- particularly if you are elderly or disabled and of low or modest income.
There shouldn't be any shame involved in receiving assistance of this type, especially if you really need the help.
To see if you qualify for help under this federal program, call the SRS office in Hays at (888) 369-4777.

You are partially right about what is driving up health care costs in your comments about private insurance. As someone who has been in healthcare for 24 years, I can share other reasons. Much well intentioned "healthcare reform legislation" has been passed with alot of baggage attached to it that when enacted, often creates more problems than it solves. This baggage comes compliments of major pharmaceutical companies and huge corporate pharmacies, large organizations like AMA and some unions. Living in LaCrosse, you remember your community was without a pharmacy for awhile due to garbage attached to the Medicare D program that makes it difficult, at best for small pharmacies to stay in business. Although nursing home reform was much needed in most states and in a few areas of Kansas, the burden of this legislation has caused many small nursing homes that proveded quality care to go out of business while larger "for profit" facility just hired attoneys to buy their way out of trouble. Talking to people who have family in Canada, I really don't think that's the answer. In my experience in nursing, letting the government control anything is a sure recipe for disaster! Real healthcare reform means our elected officials stop being influenced by corporations and organizations that are willing to jeopardize this country's health to line their own pockets. We, as voters, need to demand our legislators stop catering to these people and do the right thing.

Beer sucks: 3/6/2009
I agree beer is for losers. My mom was killed by a drunk driver, who registered twice the limit in blood alcohol. This same drunk got out of jail less than 2 years later. This same guy went on to rack up 2 more DWI's. Question how many more people will he have to kill before the cops take his damn license. Tilford is right on! I did google DWI and the hits came up all over the place in at least a half dozen states -3 people died, and dozens were injured. One drunken slob in Thibodaux, La for example was arrested for alleged 7th DWI (http://www.nola.com/news/index.ssf/2009/03/thibodaux_man_arrested_for_all.html) We need to toughen the laws on DWI...
