Those in need should use food stamps

Statistics from SRS last year indicate more than 30 percent of people in Kansas eligible for food stamps, in terms of income and circumstance, do not apply. As such, food stamps represent an under-utilized program here in Kansas.

The reasons for this remain unclear.

But if you need help feeding yourself or feeding your family, you should apply -- particularly if you are elderly or disabled and of low or modest income.

There shouldn't be any shame involved in receiving assistance of this type, especially if you really need the help.

To see if you qualify for help under this federal program, call the SRS office in Hays at (888) 369-4777.
