Righting the ship

There was a recent editorial extolling the virtues of my Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain. I beg to differ with Hays Daily News Editor and Publisher Patrick Lowry on this subject.

The other morning as I was headed in my vehicle to the coffee shop in Gilbert, Ariz., for an espresso, I hear on talk radio now is not the time for the Arizona Republican Party to censure McCain for his lack of conservatism, and Lowry pretty much says the same.

The talk radio host argued polls show little difference between the two parties in whom voters would support to control Congress; therefore, now is not a good time to criticize one of its own. I would argue the party has too many RINOS (meaning Republican in name only) such as McCain, otherwise that difference would be much greater and in Republicans' favor. McCain and too many like him, far too often, will go along with the other party to get along.

Lowry mentioned a dysfunctional Congress. McCain does absolutely nothing to rein in Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who shows absolutely no bipartisanship to the GOP -- especially bills sent over from the House.

Let me make this point at this juncture inasmuch readers probably aren't that interested in what goes on in Arizona. The likes of McCain, as I see it, highlights what's wrong with the GOP nationally. Kansans are affected by the McCains (call them the Washington establishment) that have been in our nation's capitol far too long. The elitist establishment politicians of D.C. such as McCain clearly shows why there should be term limits.

How many Democrats in Congress beat up on other Democrats? None. They all toe the party line, but leave it up to McCain to call conservative members of his own party like Ted Cruz and Rand Paul wackos. The censure was warranted, and not just for the reason mentioned.

I have the utmost respect for McCain's military service, but that does not give him a license to do his own thing in the nation's capital. He does not listen to his constituents. He's too big for that, and it is he and others like him that has fractured the party.

Kansas Rep. Tim Huelskamp recently on the Internet said "2014 is the year our tea party principles finally take hold in Washington with strong leaders Sens. Paul, Cruz and Lee, and a solidly conservative House." Why would McCain say just the opposite? Tea partiers are not extremists as media and Lowry claim. They are neighbors, your kids' teachers, the man down the street, veterans, etc., who simply want less government in our lives, less spending and lower taxes. It is President Barack Obama and his party that are extremists.

What am I supposed to think of McCain and his cronies who belong to a group taking in money from a billionaire liberal and some moderate Republicans for the primary purpose of defeating GOP conservative tea party candidates? Go to DrudgeReport.com and read reputable Michelle Malkin's column Jan. 10 about how this group and its membership is more aligned with liberals than conservatives.

Here's another important point to take away from my letter. Whether it is McCain, Gov. Christie or whomever that has an "R" before their name and mainstream media applauds them, buyer beware. When push comes to shove, you can count on media to pull the rug right out from under them when the time comes.

Liberals and conservatives are poles apart in this country because our liberal controlled government is destroying this nation. Only conservatism can save us and right the ship.
