Quality care needed

The majority of us will need long-term care after age 65. But few plan ahead. It can be difficult to consider a skilled nursing center for a family member, but taking time to fully review the options will help families find the best choice for quality care.

We're proud to note Kansas' skilled nursing and rehab centers are ranked No. 2 in the nation for the most 4- and 5-star facilities. And Kansas Health Care Association members continue to receive national honors for our nurses year after year.

But all centers are not created equal.

We encourage families to educate themselves about how to make the best choices of care for their loved ones, and someday, themselves. As informed consumers, they join with us in our sacred duty to safeguard the national treasure we have in our seniors.

We're proud to partner with other organizations such as CareConversations.org to help families become better educated about how to discuss sensitive topics, evaluate their needs, see skilled care center ratings and make good choices about care.

As we celebrate Older Americans Month, this is an excellent time to raise awareness about what it means to have quality care, to recognize providers of excellence and help families find them.

Cindy Luxem,

CEO, president of Kansas Health Care Association/Kansas Center for Assisted Living
