Praises for Victoria FD

If you've ever been awakened from a deep sleep by the sound of a smoke alarm in the early hours of the morning and find your house is filled with smoke as you frantically make your way to the telephone to call 911, you have experienced one of the most terrifying moments of your life.

Within minutes of that call, the first firemen were on the scene, followed by three fire trucks, 11 trained firefighters, an ambulance, two police officers, and others engaged in the field of service. These people truly are heroes who risk their lives to serve our community as a labor of love. They volunteered.

The Victoria Volunteer Fire Department names 22 men and one woman on its roster. I want to personally recognize those who answered the call at 1:15 a.m. Friday morning, June 7. A big thank you to Chris Brungardt, Glenn Dinkel, Cole Dreiling, Bill Geist, Verlin Hammerschmidt, Kevin Klein, Doug Kuhn, David Mason, Tom Tholen, Leon Wellbrock and Scott Wellbrock.

While firefighters are human heroes, working smoke alarms are mechanical heroes. They save lives and homes. The most important message I want to send to the readers is this: If you have smoke alarms, replace the batteries in them annually. If you have only heat alarms in your home, also add smoke alarms. If you don't have any alarms, get some. Without the smoke alarms, I would not have awakened until damage had occurred to my home.

The city of Victoria is fortunate to have the volunteer fire department, an ambulance and police service. If there are young men or women interested in serving as volunteer firefighters, contact someone on the department to find out how you can become trained and certified. Your service will be rewarding, and they're a great bunch.
