Month named for Caesar's successor

Printer-friendly version

The name of the eighth month of the year, August, came from the Roman emperor Augustus.

The dictionary, Farmers Almanac and information found on the computer agree the name came from Julius Caesar's successor, Augustus Caesar.

The name was chosen in honor of the first of the Roman emperors because several fortunate events of his life occurred during this month.

Augustus Caesar was grandnephew of Julius Caesar and was first emperor of Rome from 27 B.C. to 14 A.D.

When we turned the calendar page, our thoughts turned to hot days. That's what a Kansas August is known for -- 31 days of temperatures near the three-digit mark and school summer vacation is about to end.

Charlemagne named the month agriculturally in old German in the 15th century. He named the eighth month Aranmanoth (harvest month).

Watch for September's origin next month.
