Special to the HDN

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ellis County and RPM Speedway will have the seventh annual Race Cars & Superstars at 7 p.m. Saturday at RPM Speedway at the Ellis County Fairgrounds.

The event will include local celebrities from Ellis, Rooks, Rush, Russell and Trego counties who will compete to bring home the Sterling Silver Winner's Cup Trophy to keep, provided by Kuhn's Diamond Jewelers.

Each driver is asked to raise $1,500, and the superstar that raises the most money will lead the Superstar Parade preceding the races.

The race will consist of three heat races with four celebrities in each heat. The winner of Race Cars & Superstars then will be determined in the feature event with the top driver from each of the three heats and the top fundraiser competing to see who will take the checkered flag. The traveling trophy will be presented to the fastest celebrity. Last year's winner was Dr. Troy Hallagin, who is unable to race this year.

Ellis County drivers include Heath Dorzweiler, Jeremy Schmeidler, Karol Kieffer, Zach Patterson, Deanna Doerfler, Randy Hattesohl, Barb Wasinger and Traci Stanford.

Although the goal of each superstar is to raise $1,500, the winner each year has raised much more than that, often with last-minute donations in an attempt to secure the win. Last year, Dr. Elizabeth Ashworth took home honors by raising more than $5,500.

Pledges can be sent, designating the superstar of your choice, to Big Brothers Big Sisters, 1301 Pine, Ste. B, Hays, KS 67601.

Year-round Platinum Sponsors of Big Brothers Big Sisters, BBBS Executive Director Nancy Jeter said, include Eagle Communications; Robert and Patricia Schmidt Foundation; Nex-Tech; and United Way of Ellis County. Year-round Gold Sponsors include Gone Logo; Lifetime Dental Care (Dr. Jeffrey and Jana Lowe); Marty and Roxie Patterson; Pepsi; Pizza Hut; A&A Coors; Jeff and Marla Copper; LINK Inc.; and Centennial Lanes.
