'Iron Man 3' starts summer with a bang

Well folks, it's that time of year again -- summer blockbuster season has arrived and with it comes four months of big budget crowd-pleasers.
It's a time of year I always look forward to, and this summer is shaping up to be one for the record books.
Superheroes definitely have laid claim to the opening weekend of the summer movie season. Every summer since 2007 has been led by a superhero movie -- and most of them have been led, at least in part, by Iron Man. All three "Iron Man" films and last year's "The Avengers" have opened on the first Friday in May.
"Iron Man 3" starts with all the fanfare, if not all the speed, that one could expect from a tentpole action film. The two major action sequences are among the best in the franchise, although they could not hope to share a stage with the action from "The Avengers" -- which wasn't for lack of trying and, in some cases, overreaching. Furthermore, the character development pieces and overall pacing of the film easily surpass the often listless execution that was common in its predecessor.
Superheroes and their accompanying movies tend to shine brightest when they are doing things that no one else could do, including other superheroes. Anyone can get in a fistfight but not everyone can design, build and then use an incredible suit of armor. "Iron Man 3" certainly isn't a disappointment in the suit arena; however, the film does get slightly mired when Tony Stark is trying to solve the riddles outside of his suit.
At the end of the day, "Iron Man 3" is a solid entry in the Marvel universe and is hopefully the herald of great things to come. While the pieces of this particular suit don't quite fit perfectly together, it's still a very enjoyable piece of entertainment and a great start to a summer at the movies.
