Care for pets in the heat
The dog days of summer are here and, while we love to see people out enjoying these carefree days with "man's best friend," the increased number of pets joining us for quick trips means that awareness and vigilance are essential for protecting them from heat-related injuries and death.
Please give a second thought before you take your pet with you in your vehicle if there is any chance you are going to be out of the car, leaving your pet behind. With the intense Kansas heat this time of year, even with windows partially lowered it takes only minutes for your car's interior to be more than a pet or human can safely handle.
If you observe your pet getting too warm, the Humane Society of the United States has the published the following guidance for handling a pet that may be suffering from the heat:
It's important to be able to identify the symptoms of heat stress caused by exposure to extreme temperatures. Check the animal for signs of heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid heartbeat, restlessness, excessive thirst, lethargy, fever, dizziness, lack of coordination, profuse salivation, vomiting, a deep red or purple tongue, and unconsciousness.
If the animal shows any of the above symptoms, immediately take steps to gradually lower their body temperature. Move them into the shade or an air-conditioned area. If possible, apply ice packs or cold towels to the head, neck, and chest or immerse them in cool (not cold) water. Let them drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes. If additional help is needed, take them directly to a veterinarian.
Let's make sure everyone, including children, the elderly and our pets, make it safely through the summer heat.
